Generic: Fashion for Art’s Sake

This week’s exhibition includes work from 2nd Year Fashion Students from the Manchester School of Art and is the vision of Rebecca Stant and Ryan Higgins. Here is their statement:

“The body of work displayed is in response to a brief where students were asked to look at three ‘generic’ garments and bring in their own concepts to create an outfit.

From night dresses to wetsuits, tailored suit jackets and brogue shoes, many different garments are used to fuse imagination as well as historical and technical information gained.

A huge source of influence for both the students and the exhibition layout itself was the Maison Martin Margiela Exhibition held at Somerset House Summer 2010. The exhibition aims to explore the realm of fashion and art, using the garments to suggest that fashion is more closely linked to art than it is suggested.”
